IMD in New Zealand

Our Amazing Invisible World

On 17 September 2023, our event which was open to the public took place at the Tūranga Library.

Kids dressed in lab coats, coloured microbes, and made their own origami virus. FoldScopes were provided as gifts, so kids could take home and explore further.

We also had three activity tables. Attendees scraped their teeth to see their own oral microbes, printed their hands on agar plates to see skin microbiome and could see slime moulds grow in real time!

Last we also had 6 short talks, from kiwi poops and zombies to dinosaur-killing fungi, we covered fun topics with public appeal.

It was a very buzzy and active morning we lots of great interactions. It was fun to celebrate microorganisms with the public and I hope we can do it all again next year!

We would like to thank the staff , students, and collaborators for making this event possible. Also, thank you to the New Zealand Microbiological Society and UC Science for sponsoring the event.
