IMD in Romania

IMD 2023 was celebrated with two events in Romania. See below for their exact details.

BioArt Revolution/ Revolutia BioArt

On 19-30 September 2023, the work of artist Anna Dumitriu was displayed at the BioArt Revolution/ Revoluția BioArt exhibition in Timisoara part of the European Capital of Culture. Anna uses among others, bacteria and yeasts to create unique pieces exploring issues that face the contemporary world.

Some of the pieces displayed were, “Revolution”, impregnated with E. coli and yeast cells, and the sculptural necklace “Wooden Spirit – Amber Acid” made from carbon-neutral nylon fabric with the help of yeast.

Microbiology workshop at University of Bucharest

Our International Microorganism Day event comprises of five sections where you can sign in: Biology, Biotechnology, Ecology, Cultural Heritage and Varia and will also include a round table and a special plenary lecture entitled Antimicrobial carbonic anhydrase inhibitors given by PhD Claudiu Surupan, Universita di Firenze.

Similar to our previous editions, the Faculty of Biology selects to commemorate a Romanian scientist. This year our event is dedicated to academic Nicolae Botnariuc which dedicated his life to studying ecology and creating the Ecology department at the University of Bucharest.

The organizers will also provide handmade IMD souvenirs for all the participants during a small handmade microorganism exhibition that will take place at the event.

This event is organized by the Bucharest University Research Institute  and Faculty of Biology in collaboration with the Romanian Academy and National Institute of Biological Research and Development.
