IMD2021 celebrations - Mugla University Edition

By Eleni Koursari and Simay Eruysal

This is the first of a series of blogs in which we are going to showcase IMD2021 celebrations from all around the world. Specifically in this blog we are going to talk about IMD2021 celebrations - Mugla University Edition! Simay Eruysal, PhD student at Mugla University in Turkey, shared with us insights on their own event.

International Microorganism Day 2021, the day to celebrate microorganisms, brought many of us together under one common goal, to share and cherish how important microorganisms are in our lives. Still, in many countires local coronavirus restrictions meant that celebrations had to be kept to an online format. But we where so happy to see that some managed to organize in-person celebrations!

“We celebrated IMD2021 at the Marmaris Municipality Ataturk Science and Education Park in Turkey. On the day, a total of 9 trainers and 37 students participated.

At the entrance, our microorganism mascot welcomed the students.

We had a total of 3 events: the microorganisms exhibition, microscopy observation and yeast experiment. At the same time, there were previously photographs of microscopy observation on the television screen."

In the exhibition of microorganisms, there were posters describing the diversity of microorganisms, their benefits and harms, and the historical development of the microscope.

And students observed microorganisms growing on agars in Petri dishes.”

We encourage you to organize your own outreach events for International Microorganism Day. Please get in contact with any plans you have for IMD2022!
