Make your own yogurt: New teaching resource for IMD

This year for IMD we’re launching some brand new teaching resources. We’re delighted that the first one is all about yogurt.

It is so common in our fridges that it is easy to forget that yogurt is a wonderful product of microbiology in action. Lactic acid fermenting microbes get to work on the lactose in milk and produce acid which is the core of the process for making yogurt. It helps the milk to thicken and become acidic, transforming liquid milk into solid yogurt.

Did you know that this was easy to do at home? If you google yogurt recipes, there are countless examples of how to make delicious homemade yogurt with ease. At IMD, we’ve put together our own recipe with a guide for students and adults. We hope to guide you through experimentation and help you to understand what you need to make yogurt and what conditions are favourable for the bacteria to produce the tastiest and creamiest end product.
