International Microorganism day

When: 19 September

Time: 09:00 - 18:00

Where: Royal Belgian institute of Natural Sciences

We are offering interactive booths for all ages to celebrate International Microbe Day in the Royal Belgian institute of Natural Sciences on the 19th of September.

On September 19, 2026, the Young Belgian Society for Microbiology will celebrate IMD 2025 in Brussels, Belgium. The event will run from 10:00 to 16:30 and will be filled with exciting science activities and insights into the crucial role they play in our daily lives!

Held at the Royal Belgian institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels, the event will feature a microbiology-themed science fair. This fair is organized by passionate early-career scientists from universities across Belgium. The activities proposed will include complex and trendy scientific concepts in an accessible and interactive manner, including a workshop on fermented foods, algae tasting, showcase of biomaterials, microscopy workshops, and interactive displays for the smallest ones. The subjects covered will span general, environmental, clinical, and industrial microbiology, and they will be delivered in a way to be understood by people coming from different backgrounds. We tailor our activities to entertain and teach kids and teenagers, for whom we prepare a game to collect stickers with each done activity, a full card means a free goodie bag

Programme of the day:

From the opening of the museum until the closing of the museum, various booths will be held to celebrate the wonderful world of microbiology. We have 5-6 booths operated by the Young Belgian Society for Microbiology with microbiology-related activities. These booths include microscopy, fermentation, bio-materials, agar art and various (board) games. If the participants participate in all activities, they can obtain microbiology-related goodies.
