A Journey into the Microbial Universe

When: 17 September

Time: 15:00 - 21:00

Where: Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB) and Institute of Genomics (IG) / University of Tartu, Riia 23, Tartu

Celebrate life sciences! Engaging, inclusive workshops for all ages exploring bacteria and yeasts, bacterial viruses, fruit flies, the genetic code, and bioscience laboratory methods. Enjoy playful activities and lab tours that spark curiosity. The evening culminates in a thrilling escape room challenge, testing participants' literacy of science and fiction.

Join us for a vibrant celebration of science! Educational and entertaining event facilitated by IMCB and IG (University of Tartu, Estonia) staff to celebrate the International Researchers' Night and the International Microorganism Day. Featuring interactive and hands-on workshops focused on microbes, fruit flies, genetic code, methods in biosciences to highlight the practical applications of life sciences. Curious about biotechnology, agricultural or medical microbiology, or simply fascinated by the life around and within us? The target audiences are students and schoolchildren but there are activities for all ages to enjoy.

Join us at the lab tour, exhibition and workshops. The participants can engage in playful hands-on activities, and enjoy the company of other research-minded people over the tasty ice cream. The activities are held in Estonian and are free of charge. Pre-registration to the workshops on the events homepage is needed (opening shortly at https://tymri.ut.ee/et/teadlaste-oo).

The main facilitators are the employees and students of the institutes, members of Travelling Bioclass, Biosciences Students' Association.

Program at glance:

15:00-15:10 – opening words (the directors of the IMCB and IG), snacks (atrium)

15.10-16.00 – activities in the atrium, exhibition

16:00-16:45 and 17:00-17:45 – take part of the workshops taking place in different auditoriums and teaching labs from the following list:

“Microbes and plant protection” – Witness the duel between beneficial microbes and a plant pathogens and study microscopic but powerful biocontrol organisms. Sponsored by Estonian Society for Microbiology.

“Microbe patrol” – Is there a “magic bullet” against unwanted pathogens? Investigate the antimicrobial options and evaluate their efficacy.

“The secret code of the body” – Come and solve the secret code that every living cell harbour and take home a bracelet of a protein sequence.

“Fruitflies” – Get to know the amazing fruitflies.

“Pipetting Olympics” – Who will be the champion of the lab? Test your knowledge and speedy hands on laboratory essentials. Organized by Travelling Bioclass.

“Cutting the bacteriophage DNA” – Hands-on activity to the tools of molecular biology to detect the enzyme in the sample tube. Organized by Travelling Bioclass.

17:00-17:45 and 17:45-18:30 – house tour at IMCB and IG

16:00-21:00 – Escape Room “Going Nuclear by Homer Simpson”. Organized by Biosciences Students' Association
