IMD in Belgium
International Microorganism Day in Belgium
When: 20 September 2025
Time: 10:00 - 16:30
Where: Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels
Event Description: On September 20, 2025, the Young Belgian Society for Microbiology will celebrate IMD 2025 in Brussels, Belgium. The event will run from 10:00 to
16:30 and will be filled with exciting science activities and insights into the crucial role they play in our daily lives!
Held at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Brussels, the event will feature a microbiology-themed science fair. This fair is organized by passionate early-career scientists from universities across Belgium. The activities proposed will include complex and trendy scientific concepts in an accessible and interactive manner, including a workshop on fermented foods, algaea tasting, showcase of biomaterials, microscopy workshops, and interactive displays for the smallest ones. The subjects covered will span general, environmental, clinical, and industrial microbiology, and they will be delivered in a way to be understood by people coming from different backgrounds. We tailor our activities to entertain and teach kids and teenagers, for whom we prepare a game to collect stickers with each done activity, a full card means a free goodie bag Since 2021, the YBSM has been organizing the Belgian edition of the IMD event, attracting approximately 1,000 visitors annually. Each year, the organizing team consists of the 15 board members of YBSM—young researchers dedicated to the cause—alongside 30 to 40 volunteers from various Belgian institutions. Once again, the event will take place at the Museum of Natural Sciences, guaranteeing a high level of visibility.
Additionally, this special IMD edition will have as common thematic the 5 senses, as the planned activities and workshops will invite the public to see, smell, feel, taste and maybe even hear the microorganisms.
Lastly, we have the participation of the iGEM team of KU Leuven. They'll unveil their project, highlighting microorganisms' potential, sparking curiosity and conversations about biotech's future.
