Discover the invisible world of the human microbiome through fun and interactive workshops for primary school children. Using games, quizzes, and discussions participants will explore the diversity of microorganisms. By creating their own "bacterial cultures", participants will learn how microorganisms support our health and everyday lives.
As part of the project Your Micro-World, funded by the Centre for the Promotion of Science and organised by the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering, University of Belgrade, in collaboration with the Palace of Science, we will celebrate International Microorganism Day 2026 through Under the Microscope, a series of interactive workshops for primary school children.
The activities will take place from 15–19 September 2026, with a special focus on 17 September, at the Palace of Science in Belgrade and in collaboration with primary schools across Serbia.
The human microbiome plays a fundamental role in maintaining health, yet public awareness of its importance remains limited. Through engaging, age-appropriate activities, children will discover the microbial world and learn how microorganisms influence our health and everyday lives.
Each workshop will begin with a short introduction, followed by interactive games, quizzes, discussions, and hands-on activities. Participants will create their own "bacterial cultures" in Petri dish models using different materials, combining creativity with science through a fun, multisensory learning experience.
By exploring the invisible world of microorganisms, children will develop scientific curiosity, improve their understanding of the human microbiome, and discover why these tiny organisms are essential for our health.
