Microbiome Breakfast: Coffee, Conversation and Microbes

An interactive breakfast and roundtable reconnecting students with the experiences of the exhibition The Diversity of Life That Lives Within Us. Through reflection and discussion, participants will deepen their understanding of the human microbiome, antimicrobial stewardship, and the essential role of microorganisms in health and everyday life.
Welcome Breakfast – Feed Your Microbiome.
Reconnecting with the Exhibition. Presentation of photographs, selected memories and key messages from The Diversity of Life That Lives Within Us, encouraging participants to recall previous experiences and reflect on how their perceptions of microorganisms have evolved. During breakfast, participants will discuss current topics related to the human microbiome, including microbial diversity, host–microbe interactions, nutrition, probiotics, antimicrobial stewardship, hygiene myths and the impact of lifestyle on microbial communities. Photographs and selected memories from the previous exhibition will be used as conversation starters, stimulating reflection on how science communication can influence perceptions and everyday decisions.
Breakfast with the Microbiome: Interactive Roundtable Discussion.
Creative Activity – Sculpting the Microbiome. “Our Shared Microbiome”
Participants use modelling clay to collaboratively create a large artistic panel inspired by microorganisms and the human microbiome.
Closing Reflections. Participants share key take-home messages, complete a brief feedback activity and take a group photograph to celebrate International Microorganism Day.
International Microorganism Day 2026 – Microorganisms: Impacts and Contributions to Health, Industry, and Society

Celebrating IMD2026, this event highlights the vital role of microorganisms in human and planetary health, agriculture, and industry. It is integrated into the ‘Beyond Postgraduate Education: Dialoguing About Scientific Knowledge with the Community/PROEXT-UFCG’ and supported by the Ibero-American Network of Researchers in Mycology (RIIMICO), PET-Health Climate and School Health Programme.
PART I – Beyond the University Walls
• Title: Microbiology & Art: Small Organisms, Great Impacts: How Viruses, Bacteria, and Fungi Influence Our Lives
An educational workshop on the importance of microorganisms and their relationships with human and planetary health and food. In an accessible and interactive way, the workshop will address the transmission and prevention of diseases caused by microorganisms, as well as basic measures to prevent food contamination and reduce health risks.
As a playful activity, students will observe images of different microorganisms and participate in a drawing and/or painting activity, using art as a tool for science communication and learning in microbiology.
• Target audience: Children aged 9 to 12 years.
PART II – Open University: Microorganisms in Science and Industry
The activities will be open to the academic community and the general public. The programme will include a talk and a discussion session on topics related to microorganisms, food, plants, and industrial applications.

Workshop em comemoração aos 25 anos do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Microbiologia Agrícola

On September 17th and 18th, a workshop will be held to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Postgraduate Program in Agricultural Microbiology (PPGMA) at UFLA and International Microorganism Day, in the Prof. Magno Antônio Patto Ramalho Amphitheater – DBI Amphitheater (Ramalhão).
The event commemorates the trajectory of the PPGMA/UFLA in scientific production and the development of Agricultural Microbiology. Furthermore, it will bring together professors, researchers, former professors, undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, and professionals to share knowledge, present research, and discuss different applications and perspectives of microbiology, highlighting the importance of microorganisms for agriculture, health, industry, food, and the environment.
One of the objectives of this initiative is also to promote integration between students and faculty of the PPGMA program, enabling, especially for incoming students, to get to know the professors, their different areas of expertise, and the research lines developed within the program.
The program will include lectures, roundtables, pitch presentations by PPGMA doctoral students, and networking opportunities, providing a space for scientific dissemination, the exchange of experiences and knowledge, and the strengthening of connections between different generations and areas of expertise within the PPGMA community.
