Microbe Detectives and the Secrets of Food

When: 17 September

Time: 10:00- 17:00

Where: National Ploughing Championships 2026, Screggan, Tullamore, Co. Offaly

Step into the fascinating world of microorganisms and discover the hidden secrets behind the food we eat every day. As Microbe Detectives, participants will investigate the tiny organisms that help create some of our favourite foods while also uncovering the microbes responsible for food spoilage and foodborne illness.

The National Ploughing Championships 2026 will take place from 15-17 September in Screggan, Tullamore, Co. Offaly. While Ireland's largest outdoor event is famous for tractors and trade, visitors can also explore Microbe Detectives and the Secrets of Food at the TU Dublin School of Food Science and Environmental Health stand.

Discover the hidden world of microbes and learn how these tiny organisms help produce foods such as bread, cheese, and yoghurt, while also playing a role in food spoilage and safety. Through fun, interactive activities and hands-on investigations, you'll explore how these invisible inhabitants can be both helpful heroes and harmful villains. Join us to solve the mysteries of food and learn how microorganisms shape the taste, safety, and sustainability of our food from farm to fork.
